Bioluminescence. What is it anyway???

WARTY COMB JELLYFISH
Bioluminescence is when a plant or animal makes a chemical reaction inside is body to either scare away predators  or to attract prey. They include  plants, fish, squid, jellyfish, bugs, and a few other animals. One of my favorites is the warty comb squid. They are filter feeders that float in the ocean filtering and eating small particles  that are also floating around in the ocean.

FIREFLY SQUID

Bioluminescence is made by mixing 2 chemicals called Luciferin and Luciferace  or by mixing 2 chemicals called Luciferin and Photoprotein. Some animals produce their own luciferin and others get it through their food or surroundings.

                                           Fun Facts

         - The light produced by the animals is cold light, which means less than 20% of the it produces heat.

           - Some fish have red bioluminescent light, which its prey can't sea but will glow when under it.

-Even though it is light in public aquariums they still make habitats for bioluminescent  fish.
