Bioluminescence. What is it anyway???

WARTY COMB JELLYFISH
Bioluminescence is when a plant or animal makes a chemical reaction inside is body to either scare away predators  or to attract prey. They include  plants, fish, squid, jellyfish, bugs, and a few other animals. One of my favorites is the warty comb squid. They are filter feeders that float in the ocean filtering and eating small particles  that are also floating around in the ocean.
DRAGON FISH

FIREFLY SQUID

Bioluminescence is made by mixing 2 chemicals called Luciferin and Luciferace  or by mixing 2 chemicals called Luciferin and Photoprotein. Some animals produce their own luciferin and others get it through their food or surroundings.

                                           Fun Facts

         - The light produced by the animals is cold light, which means less than 20% of the it produces heat.

           - Some fish have red bioluminescent light, which its prey can't sea but will glow when under it.

-Even though it is light in public aquariums they still make habitats for bioluminescent  fish.

Marine Life

There are many different kinds of marine lifeforms that range everywhere from seaweed to whales. There are 3 zones that the different animals live in. The first and top most level is called the Sunlit Zone, it goes down 600 feet below the surface. The second one is the Twilight Zone, this one goes down 600 to 3,000 feet below the Sunlit Zone into the Midnight Zone, which goes all the way down to the bottom.
CRUSTACEANS

One family is called Crustaceans. They are crabs, crayfish, krill, shrimp and lobster. They can be in all the zones. There 50,000 known types of Crustaceans.

MOLLUSKS
Next come Mollusks. There 100,000 known types of known Mollusks. Filter feeders make up a large part of Mollusks.animals with 2 shells are called bivalves, oysters, clams and animals like those are bivalves. Squid and octopuses are also Mollusks.

 FISH
The next group is fish. There are over 20,000 different types of fish. They are divided into two groups, those with jaws and those without jaws. They can be pretty, scary, good to eat, and fun for pets, but most of all they are all part of God's creation.

DOLPHINS

There also mammals like whales and dolphins. They need to breath air and are very smart.
KELP
FORESTS

There are great forests of kelp off the
coasts of Japan and the state
of California in the U.S.A. They make a great habitat for many animals.

Ocean salt

Have you ever wondered how much salt is really in the ocean? Well, scientists have determined that for every 1,000 grams of ocean water there are 35 grams of salt and 965 grams of water. The sea water is so salty that if you were to drink it with no clean water for a few days or even weeks you would get very dehydrated and die if you didn't get any fresh water.
Your kidneys remove extra salt and water from your blood and keep the elements of your blood at very specific levels. If you drank just 1 liter of ocean water you would have to drink 3 liters of fresh water to keep from getting dehydrated and to flush out all of the salt from your kidneys.
Is all of the ocean salty? No. The ocean near South America has fresh water were the Amazon River drains into the ocean. You can get fresh water for up to 100 miles from the coastline.
Some scientists thought that if they used tugboats to tow a 10 mile iceberg to LosAngeles from Antarctica they could use it for drinking water. Even though it would lose half of its bulk,it would water the city for at least 1 month but they never ended up doing this. Can you guess why?
